ALL ABOUT CAMBRIAN BLUE CLAY
The Cambrian (/ˈkæmbriən/) is the first geological period of the Paleozoic Era, lasting from 541.0 ± 1.0 to 485.4 ± 1.9 million years ago (mya) and is succeeded by the Ordovician. Its subdivisions, and indeed its base, are somewhat in flux. The period was established by Adam Sedgwick, who named it after Cambria, the Latin name for Wales, where Britain's Cambrian rocks are best exposed.
The Cambrian is unique in its unusually high proportion of lagerstätten. These are sites of exceptional preservation, where 'soft' parts of organisms are preserved as well as their more resistant shells. This means that our understanding of the Cambrian biology surpasses that of some later periods.
The Cambrian Period marked a profound change in life on Earth; prior to the Cambrian, living organisms on the whole were small, unicellular and simple. Complex, “multicellular” organisms gradually became more common in the millions of years immediately preceding the Cambrian, but it was not until this period that mineralized – hence readily fossilized – organisms became common. The rapid diversification of life forms in the Cambrian, known as the Cambrian explosion, produced the first representatives of all modern animal phyla. (wikipedia.org)
NORTH-WEST REGION OF RUSSIA
( LENINGRAD REGION )
The name of “Cambrian Clay” comes from the earliest Paleozoic period - "Cambrian" (dating back about 600 million years). During the Cambrian, the continents and seas differed from present day configurations.
Four major continents, Gondwanaland, Angara, and the two sections of Euramerica, were inundated with a rising sea level; accumulating thick sedimentary deposits.
This sedimentary rock, i.e., conglomerate, sandstone, shale, and limestone, was formed in shallow seas that covered large areas of present-day North America, Europe, and Asia.
In the United States, Lower Cambrian formations are found in the Appalachian; the sandstones near Waucoba Springs,
S. Calif.; and the thick layers of conglomerates and sandstones in Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
Middle Cambrian rocks are found in New Brunswick, near Braintree, Mass.
Upper Cambrian formations include the St. Croix sandstone of Wisconsin and the upper Mississippi valley, parts of the Arbuckle limestone of Oklahoma, and the Potsdam sandstone in New York's Adirondacks.
In Russia, the Cambrian beds are remarkable in that they comprise mostly undisturbed and unconsolidated sand and clay despite their great age.
At that time, the Russian Lower Cambrian subdivision - Siberia separated from the supercontinent to form an isolated land mass.
During this period early sediment began to form of what is now known as the Cambrian blue clay.
Over the 600 million years Siberia shifted, morphed, and eventually became land - locked in the Eurasian continent (*During the Pleistocene epoch, great continental ice sheets scoured and depressed the shield's surface - and the ancient rocks have yielded a rich variety of minerals…).
"Leningrad region" - is an ecological pearl of the North-West Russia, and has an absolutely unique structure of the subsoil.
There is no any other place on the plains of Russia where you can find such a complete set of outputs of ancient rocks (ranging in age from Archaean to the Late Paleozoic).
In the basis of the Paleozoic sediments - are sandstone and Cambrian blue clay, the age of which is about 600 million years.
This is due to the fact, that the Leningrad region lies at the junction of two major structures of the earth’s crust - on the southern edge of the Baltic Shield’s crystalline bedrock and Eastern European Platform. Together they form the East European (Russian) platform - where its Pre-Cambrian folded basement emerges on the surface.
*According to researches made by Russian scientists, Cambrian blue clay from Leningrad region - is the oldest Cambrian blue clay in the World!
